Art Graduates – Support Children in Newcastle Schools

On behalf of Protocol Education, we are seeking Art Graduates to work as SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Support Assistants in primary and secondary schools across Newcastle.

This full-time, term-time role (Monday to Friday) is an exciting opportunity to use your creativity and communication skills to support children who face emotional and behavioural challenges, helping them succeed both academically and personally.

Why This Role is Perfect for You:
Your background in art and creativity makes you ideally suited to engage and inspire young people. While you may occasionally use your creative skills to support art-related activities, this role goes far beyond the art room—you’ll be supporting children across the curriculum in subjects like English, maths, and science, as well as offering emotional and behavioural support. This is a fantastic opportunity if you’re considering a career in education, art therapy, youth work, or mental health support.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Providing 1:1 and small group support to children with SEMH needs and SEND across a range of subjects, not just art.

  • Using creativity as a tool to engage students, build confidence, and promote positive behaviours.

  • Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced trauma or face emotional challenges.

  • Supporting behaviour management strategies and encouraging students to express themselves in positive ways.

  • Collaborating with teachers and pastoral teams to deliver personalised support and help students thrive across all areas of learning.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A degree in Fine Art, Graphic Design, Art History, Illustration, or a related creative field.

  • Full availability Monday to Friday during term time.

  • A passion for working with children and young people, particularly those facing additional challenges.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • A patient, creative, and proactive approach to supporting student development.

Why Work with Protocol Education?

  • Valuable Experience – Gain practical skills ideal for careers in education, art therapy, and youth support.

  • Dedicated Support – We provide ongoing professional development and personalised guidance.

  • Local Opportunities – Work in primary and secondary schools across Newcastle.

  • Career Progression – Many of our temporary roles lead to permanent opportunities.
